The Number of Donkeys
A man had seven donkeys. He wanted to sell them at the market. Before he set off, he counted them and said, “There are seven, that's good.” Then he sat on one of the donkeys and rode off. On the way, he thought, “I want to see if all seven donkeys are still there,” and he began to count: “One, two, three, four, five, six...” He looked around, but there were only six donkeys around him. “I must have counted wrong: one, two, three, four, five, six... Where is the seventh donkey?”
He counted again and again. Finally, he cried out, “I have to go home an let my wife count them.”
It was already evening when he arrived home. He called for his wife. When she came out of the house, he said: “I left with seven donkeys, but now I only have six. I haven't lost any and I haven't sold any. Please count the donkeys.”
The woman counted the donkeys, laughed and said: "Look, there are six donkeys and you're sitting on the seventh. You haven't lost one, you've gained one. You are the eighth donkey! Come in, it's time to eat."
The man brought all seven donkeys into the stable, glad that the adventure had ended well. Whether he went back to the market the next day, the story does not say.
