Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd who wanted to get married. He was particularly taken with three sisters. The three women liked him too, but he simply couldn’t decide which one was the right one.

His mother realised that this decision was troubling him. Finally, she said: ‘I know how you can find out which woman is right for you. Invite all three over, put a nice piece of cheese on the table for them, and watch how they eat it.”

The following Sunday, he invited the three sisters to his home and did everything just as his mother had said.

The first sister greedily devoured her piece of cheese, rind and all. The second cut off so much of the rind that there was hardly any cheese left. The third, however, cut off only as much rind as was necessary and ate the cheese with relish.

Once the three had left, the young man told his mother what he had seen. She said: “Marry the third one. She will bring you happiness.”

So he did, and lived with his wife in happiness and peace for the rest of his life.
